Poetic Exploration of the Heart

Horizontal vs. Vertical Life

Horizontal vs. Vertical Life

Of all the elements, I love water most. Maybe I’d love air too, if I knew how to fly, but I don’t. I can swim and I can dive. Deep water diving is the closest I’ve come to experiencing the feeling of total freedom. It lets you move in all directions: up, down, left, right, around… No limits. I suppose it’s like flying. But like I said, I can’t fly.

Out of the water, my movements are restricted by physical boundaries. Life, however, is not. You can push its limits. You can live it in all directions. But that takes guts, which is why – when it comes to personal self-expression – most people choose to compartmentalize their experiences.

By compartmentalizing, we condemn ourselves to a life lived in shallow, horizontal lines, so parallel to each other, there is no prospect of them ever merging. If we only dared to integrate those horizontal experiences, we would start to live our life vertically too, with limitless depth, and limitless freedom of movement that would enrich us, and the people around us, and would inevitably create incredible new opportunities for our self-growth, and many little miracles we never even dreamed of.

Don’t ask me how, but I know this to be true.
